Feeling a little frazzled by the everyday stresses of life?
Stress, be it from poor diet, toxins, physical or emotions stress or illness, has an enormous impact on the body. In fact, the state of our health can be directly measured by the length and health of our telomeres.
Telomere (tel-uh-meer) from the Greek telos (end) and meros (part)
So what exactly are telomeres?
Inside the nucleus of a cell, our genes are arranged along twisted, double-stranded molecules of DNA called chromosomes. At the ends of the chromosomes are stretches of DNA called telomeres, which protect our genetic data, make it possible for cells to divide, and hold some secrets to how we age and possible tendency to disease.
Your Genetic ‘Hardware’
Our genetic ‘hardware’ inside the nucleus of the cells, is arranged along the twisted double strand of. The telomeres are the little caps at the end of the strands of DNA, protecting the chromosomes from fraying and unraveling.
Our cells are constantly replicating and replenishing, however, each time the telomeres are just a little shorter, even though the DNA remains unchanged. Telomeres are pretty much your aging clock, as eventually they get too short to do their job properly, causing the cells to age.
How old are you really?
Measuring the telomeres represents your biological age versus your chronological age. In a nutshell, short telomeres, equals premature aging!
Sounds depressing huh?!
Now here’s the good news, your DNA is your hardware, but you have the ability to run your ‘software program’, meaning that by taking control of your health, you can control your genetic expression and aging process!
So how can you do that?
Taking control of the aging process means taking control of unchecked inflammation in the body, and considering factors such as lifestyle changes, exercise, stress reduction and proper sleep.
The underlying causes of inflammation could be an imbalance of gut ecology, known as the microbiota, chronic infection, or allergies, these are the ‘virus on the motherboard’, and all contribute to accelerated again.
A ‘system reboot’ can add years to your life, and I am so intrigued by the emerging world of nutrigenomics, creating a diet and lifestyle blueprint guided by individual DNA.
